Huntington Beach is a city in Orange County California, located in the southern part of the state. Named after Henry E. Huntington, Huntington Beach had a population just under 190,000 as of the 2010 census and is the seventh-largest city in the state of California. Nicknamed “Surf City,” Huntington Beach boasts exceptional surfing conditions all year-round.
A Brief History
Originally inhabited by the Tongva Tribe before Spanish soldier Manuel Nieto received a land grant of 300,000 acres in 1784. Over a century later, Huntington Beach was incorporated Huntington Beach was incorporated during the tenure of Ed Manning, the city’s inaugural mayor. The city’s principle developer was Huntington Beach Company, a real estate company owned by Henry E. Huntington. Today, the Huntington Beach Company still owns most of Huntington Beach’s mineral rights.
The largest employers in Huntington Beach include The Boeing Company, Quiksilver, Cambro Manufacturing, Hyatt Regency Huntington Beach, C & D Aerospace, Huntington Beach Hospital, Rainbow Disposal, Huntington Beach Healthcare, Waterfront Hilton Beach Resort, Srixon and Cleveland Golf. Huntington Beach is also home to the International Surfing Museum and the Huntington Beach Pier.
Educationally, Huntington Beach is home to Golden West College, Huntington Beach High School, The Pegasus School, Brethren Christian Junior/Senior High School, Huntington Christian School and Grace Lutheran School. The Huntington Beach Union High School District includes Edison High School, Huntington Beach High School, Marina High School and Ocean View High School. The district is also home to Valley Vista High School, an alternative school.
Numerous musicians have called Huntington Beach home, including Matt Costa, Avenged Sevenfold, Reel Big Fish, The Vandals, Alien Ant Farm, Scott Weiland (Stone Temple Pilots, Velvet Revolver), The Dirty Heads and hellogoodbye. Huntington Beach’s sister cities include Anjo (Japan) and Manly (Australia).
